Pharmacist Highlight
I had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting with Dr. Ericka V. Hylick. Let me tell you how this conversation felt so good to my soul! When I first “met” Ericka I was an eager p4 student sliding into her DMs. It started with me thanking her for her informative presentation that she gave at my school and then it turned into frequent questions on interview preparation.
Today, we were able to catch up as two pharmacists well established in our careers. Our discussion was full of laughter as we spoke of entrepreneurship, giving back, family, naps, and our white coat journeys!
Meet Dr. Ericka V. Hylick
Dr. Hylick is a published author and registered pharmacist practicing in the pharmaceutical industry space. She holds multiple degrees, has residency training, and completed a fellowship at one of the top pharmaceutical companies in the world! When she is not busy being the alien superstar that she is; she’s volunteering at her local elementary school showing kids the fun side of science and mathematics. Her goal is to equip, educate, and empower black and underrepresented minority populations by offering resources as they navigate the complex landscape to a career in the medical field.
When did you fall in love with pharmacy?
Growing up, she always imagined herself as a combination of Cliff and Claire from the Cosby Show or that moment in 7th grade when she dissected her first earthworm. It was solidified around 2005 when her grandmother suggested that she become a druggist. During this time there was a new Walgreens in her town and this was her first experience in a pharmacy setting. Her friend told the pharmacist, “My friend just graduated with her biology degree, can she work here?” That’s how it all began!
What advice would you give your younger self?
“Let someone else tell you no, before you tell yourself no.” Ericka spoke of the importance of going after opportunities even when you feel too afraid to do so. Don’t deny yourself a chance by not taking one in the first place!
Tell me your entrepreneurship story?
She explained, “It fell into my lap, then it took on a life of its own, and became a masterpiece!” There was so much passion as she was describing her book, I Wear A White Coat. Her success in the entrepreneurial side she attributes to being able to evolve, having humility, and asking questions.
What is your White Coat Superpower?
Working in so many different areas of pharmacy and to pick up transferable skills and in her words, “learn the secret sauce”. Then to take this information, make it plain and share it with others is her superpower!
Final Thoughts
This was such a beautiful full circle moment for me to interview someone that I admire and respect so much. I hope this post encourages you to slide into those LinkedIn DMs and reach out to people or future mentors. Remember to always ask the questions, do the work, and never tell yourself no!
